Car Parts Theft: Does Insurance Cover It?

You walk up to your car and notice something is off. A second look confirms it: the mirrors are gone. Or the tyres. Or the headlights. Or maybe the brand emblem someone decided to take home. It is a familiar scenario of car part theft. And then comes the real question: does insurance cover it?

The short answer is: it depends. But don’t worry — the situation is easier to understand once you know what your policy actually includes.

Car insurance: what does it actually cover?

First, it is important to remember that not all car insurance policies are the same. There are different levels of protection, and what is included depends on the coverage you have contracted.

The mandatory third-party liability policy, often called “third-party insurance,” does not cover damage to your own car. It only covers harm you may cause to other people or their property. So if that is the only cover you have, a stolen mirror is your responsibility.

If, however, your policy includes optional guarantees within comprehensive or own-damage insurance, such as glass breakage, fire, lightning or explosion, or, in this case, theft or robbery, then the answer changes.

Is theft of car parts covered?

The Theft or Robbery cover provides compensation for damage caused to the vehicle by theft (when there is no violence) or robbery (when violence or threats are involved), including unauthorised use of the vehicle, whether attempted or completed.

But what happens when the whole car is not taken? What if only the wheels, radio, mirrors, or catalytic converter are stolen?

If the parts taken were mounted on the vehicle, then yes, the claim may fall within the Theft or Robbery cover. Damage or destruction to vehicle components caused by this type of crime may also be included.

That said, there are important details to keep in mind.

Exclusions under Theft or Robbery cover

There are situations in which the insurance will not apply. Some of the most relevant are:

1. Undeclared extras

Equipment, accessories and instruments that were not originally fitted by the manufacturer and are not part of the vehicle’s standard equipment — such as an aftermarket sound system or special alloy wheels — are only protected if they have been expressly valued in the Policy Particulars. Otherwise, they will not be considered for compensation, no matter how expensive they were.

2. Left unlocked or with the key inside? That is a problem

If you left the car unlocked or forgot the key inside, even briefly, and it was in a public place, the insurance will not cover the loss. The logic is straightforward: negligence weakens the protection.

3. Gross negligence or serious carelessness? Also excluded

For example, if you lent the car to someone you knew was irresponsible, or left the doors unlocked for days, the insurer may consider that you failed to take reasonable care.

4. Missing original keys?

If you no longer have all the keys that came with the vehicle and cannot prove they were stolen or taken — with a formal police report and supporting documentation — the insurance may refuse the claim.

5. The thief lives with you? Be careful.

If the theft or robbery was committed by someone who lives with you or depends on you economically — for example, a family member or domestic employee — the cover may also be excluded.

How does compensation work?

Caravela may pay compensation 60 days after the theft has been reported to the authorities and to the insurer, if the vehicle — or the stolen parts, where applicable — has not been recovered.

In other words, you cannot simply notify the insurer. You also need to file a formal police complaint and make all reasonable efforts to recover the property.

Is there a deductible?

The Theft or Robbery cover does not include a deductible unless your Policy Particulars say otherwise. In practical terms, you may receive the full compensation amount if all the conditions are met.

How much can you receive?

  • If there is a total loss — for example, if the car disappears completely — you may receive the agreed value of the vehicle (the insured amount), minus the salvage value, if any, and without a deductible unless stated otherwise;
  • If there is a partial loss — such as theft of parts — the amount will depend on the value of the missing parts and the agreed value of the car.

So, if only one car part is stolen, is it covered?

Short answer: yes, but only if you have taken out Theft or Robbery cover and provided the theft involved breaking in, violence, or unlawful use and complies with the terms of the contract.

In other words, the insurer will not cover a mirror taken overnight if you left the vehicle unlocked by mistake. But if a window was broken to steal it, or if the authorities confirm a theft situation, you are better protected.

And remember: any extras must be declared in the policy.

Final thoughts: if something is missing, let it not be from your insurance

Nobody wants to find their car lighter than when they parked it. The good news is that, with the right cover and sensible care, Caravela can help you replace what was taken.

Check the Policy Particulars of your Car Insurance. Do you have Theft or Robbery cover active? Did you declare the extras?

If you are not sure, it may be time to review your policy.

Take the right route. Protect what is yours.
